Front Calipers FLT/FLHT

M*dic249 said: I'm heading to a swap this weekend and I'm looking for front calipers for my '83 FLHT (dual 10" disk). According to my parts manual mine are OE P/N 43942-79 and 43951-79. Are these interchangeable with any dual disc front caliper or are they as bastardized as everything else on my bike? :D Thanks! JR

ch*efbobber said: Without seeing yours, I don't know for sure. I'm thinking you have the two small calipers and if so they are the same as like 79 dual disk FX and some FXWG, but if you see some at the meet that look like yours they are probably the same. Pictures would help. Good luck.

sp*repartsracing said: Also fit rear of 79 sporty, or at lead one side.

I knew they were similar but I haven't measured my mine yet to be sure. This is the biggest learning curve I have encountered since buying this bike. It's the first shovel I've owned and I've learned the hard way that having a 5-speed rubber mount is MUCH different than everything else! Tell ya' what Jamie...I'll buy the beer and you can tell me if the shit I pick up this weekend will fit my bike! :D JR

ch*efbobber said: I really love this place. New lessons everyday. 1st never trust an eyeball comparison unless they are side by side, 2nd never buy a rubber mount. Thanks sparepartsracing.

M*dic249 said: 2nd never buy a rubber mount. She may be a pain in the ass to shop for but I love the way she rides! Yes, I'm talking about my bike...:D:D JR

T*xas Mark said: JR, Sorry I missed ya in Dallas. I was off-line for a few days and didn't see your post until to late. I'm not much on strip joints but, I do love to eat and I know where to find it in Dallas. PM if you need to come down again. Mark

M*dic249 said: No problem Mark...I didn't really get a chance to get out anyway. I would definitely like to come down with a little free time on my hands! JR

*nverse121 said: Medic, I don't want to spend your money, but if you aren't locked into stock appearance, I highly recommend you gve FabKevin a call. FLTs are big and heavy. They need good brakes. Explain your real budget. He does sell brackets if you can get calipers. Pair of these babies and a 5/8" master will STOP your world. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i263/inverse121/Motorcycles/Project%20Shovel%20Bagger/aed68ee4.jpg

M*dic249 said: Thanks Chris, I have thought about going that route and just haven't looked into it seriously yet. I got to thinking about it Saturday when I splurged a ride (34 F but sunny :D) and found my front brakes soft again. I have a small, annoying seal issue somewhere that I can't seem to track down (never see fluid but somehow finding air) but I had to bleed them down at least 3 times last year. On top of that it looks like the PO replaced the bleeders and messed up the threads on both sides. Maybe I'm just wary of 30 year old calipers! But...when they are bled I've always been confident in their braking power. Maybe I have just accepted mediocrity?? JR

*nverse121 said: The stock brakes really aren't awful, but FLT parts can unfortunately be expensive. If you aren't set on stock appearance, you can do much better for a similar price. I can't remember what the mounts look like on those legs. My CRS is getting bad.

w*ynebow said: i pulled my eals on my calipers and had the HD dealer match them up , pistons were good , J&P had them but , they didnt fit , FLT means FLT from what i found , comfy ride though , 1340 , 5 speed , and rubber wayne
